How would I know if my loved one is being abused or neglected?
There are many warning signs of neglect and physical abuse, including
- Bed sores
- Broken bones
- Bruises
- Sudden weight loss or gain
- Depression or other sudden mood changes
- Infected sores
- Untreated wounds
If your relative is only experiencing one of these symptoms, it might not be abuse. People in nursing homes are often frail, so wounds sometimes happen. However, there is one symptom that is a sure sign of neglect. There is no excuse for an infected wound. If that wound was treated in a timely manner, it would not have become infected.
Not all abuse is physical. If your loved one is telling you that she or he is being abused, hear them out. Even if they are no outward physical signs, they may be subject to verbal or emotional abuse. Also, watch for sudden changes in your loved one's accounts. Bad caregivers might try to defraud your relative, especially if they are mentally vulnerable.
